Prem Rog to Lust Stories! When Indian cinema stepped into taboo land

Image
READ MORE Lust Stories has joined the list of movies that made headlines, because of the unorthodox topics it conveys through the medium of cinema. PREEJA ARAVIND takes a look at other such films which dealt with unsaid subjects Four directors tell four different stories about women and their sexual needs in ‘ Lust Stories ‘ that was released on Netflix last week. The film has the internet divided; critics love to hate it, while others are showing praises on it. What’s more, the ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ song by Lata Mangeshkar picturised on a masturbation scene has angered another segment. But, ‘Lust Stories’ is just one of the many such movies that have touched upon unconventional, and at times taboo subjects. Lesbian relations, widow remarriage, prolonged sexual abuse in families, sex workers, AIDS — these are some of the few topics that have been made into films over the past decades in India. Recharge wells: solution to flooding and water scarcity

READ MORE A few streets in T. Nagar now have an alternative to mitigate waterlogging — recharge wells. Recharge wells are small well-like structures on the roadside or part of pavements that have perforated lids to allow water percolation. Representatives from five residents welfare associations and SWARAN (Save Water and Recharge Aquifers Network) recently submitted a proposal urging Chennai Corporation to prioritise recharge wells over stormwater drains in their areas on the lines of those in T. Nagar. Residents of Raman Street and Lodi Khan Street in T. Nagar partnered with SWARAN to construct the recharge wells, which could potentially tackle the twin problems of water scarcity and flooding. N. Ramshankar, SWARAN’s founder and coordinator, said recharge wells are ideal for recharging groundwater and minimising waterlogging. “We must have more such structures along city roads and also incorporate them in the existing SWD (stormwater drain) network. Instead of drain...

READ MORE THURSDAY, June 28, 2018 (HealthDay News) — Nearly 80 percent of meat in U.S. supermarkets contains antibiotic-resistant bacteria, according to the Environmental Working Group, a non-profit environmental research organization. The bacteria — often called “superbugs” — were resistant to at least one of 14 antibiotics tested for in 2015 by the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System, a federal-public health partnership. Antibiotic resistance is a serious threat to health and food security, according to the World Health Organization. “Consumers need to know about potential contamination of the meat they eat, so they can be vigilant about food safety , especially when cooking for children, pregnant women, older adults or...

Weight Loss May Reverse Course of Atrial Fibrillation

Image
READ MORE By Amy Norton HealthDay Reporter THURSDAY, June 28, 2018 (HealthDay News) — Weight loss might help reverse progression of a common heart arrhythmia in obese adults, a new study shows. Researchers found that when obese adults with atrial fibrillation ( a-fib ) shed at least 10 percent of their starting weight, most saw the course of their condition reverse. More than half became a-fib -free during the study period. Experts said the findings underscore the value of sustained weight loss for obese a-fib patients. “The fact that as little as a 10 percent weight loss resulted in such dramatic change is impressive,” said Dr. Dhanunjaya Lakkireddy, a cardiologist who specializes in treating heart arrhythmias. “The benefits can be amazing,” he said. Lakkireddy, who was not involved in the study, is chairman-elect of the American College of Cardiology’s electrophysiology section. Weight loss is critical, he explained, because obesity feeds m...

Chandimal did not intend to tamper

READ MORE Facebook Twitter Facebook Messenger Pinterest Email print comment Sri Lanka’s cricket administrators are unlikely to impose their own separate sanctions upon Dinesh Chandimal , and remain adamant that there was no intent to tamper with the ball during the St Lucia Test earlier this month. This even though the ICC found Chandimal guilty of the offence. Chandimal has already served a one-match ban for the tampering, and is likely to receive further punishment over a Spirit of Cricket charge due to the team’s refusal to take the field for two hours on day three. Although sports minister Faiszer Mustapha, under whose oversight SLC is temporarily functioning, said he was “disturbed” by the team’s decision to delay play, he suggested the ICC sanctions alone would be sufficient. “My aim was not to tamper, and that’s why I appealed against the ICC. I know – and my team-mates know – that I didn’t do anything wrong” Dines...

READ MORE Nick Kyrgios comes into Wimbledon in prime form.
