Orphaned female children from slums, now put in schools, had an opportunity to meet City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan at his office in Vepery and take a tour of the premises on Saturday.


Around 21 children, studying from Standard II to VIII from Bishop Aelen Home for Children, came to the Commissioner’s office in the morning. With the help of well-wishers, the home’s founder, Sr. Rose, got an appointment with Mr. Viswanathan.


Interacting with the children, Mr. Viswanathan told them to focus on studies and also inquired about each one’s goal in life.


When many of them said they wanted to join the police force, Mr. Viswanathan said, “You should work hard to achieve your goal. Complete your degree and prepare for civil services examinations . If you work hard, you can accomplish your goal.”


The Commissioner told his colleagues to take the children around his office and explain the functioning of various wings.


Women personnel took the children around the control room and briefed them on its functioning.


Sister Rose told The Hindu, “Whenever a new child comes to our home, we ask him/her about interests and ambitions. We facilitated a meeting with the commissioner to motivate them.”


The children were then taken to a restaurant for lunch.

The report, from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, looked at nearly 12,000 fatal opioid overdoses occurring between July 2016 and June 2017 in states across the Northeast, the Midwest and the West. “Most states were simultaneously struggling with a complex mix of prescription and illicit opioid deaths,” reported the team led by Christine Mattson, of the CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control.
