“The national team and Switzerland mean everything to me,” the 21-year-old said in an interview with FIFA.com. “I came to the country from Cameroon when I was five and all my schooling and football education has been here. Switzerland welcomed ‘Breel’ when he was just ‘Breel’ and turned him into Breel Embolo.”
Moving to Switzerland from Cameroon with his mother when he was a child, Embolo climbed the youth ranks at a number of different youth teams in Basel before joining city giants FC Basel in 2010 at the age of 13. He now laces his boots for German Bundesliga side Schalke, where he recovered from a long injury lay-off in time to find his form again ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™.
Switzerland fans have supported him for years, regardless of whether or not he plays or scores. And when Embolo flashes his smile after a game, any worries seem to just melt away for a moment. “It’s wonderful to have such great fans that are always behind us and give us so much,” he said. “That’s something that characterises Switzerland, that positivity and togetherness. We have to keep going like that because it’s the only way to achieve anything.”
