Mumbai: Woman develops an infection after doctors accidentally leave mop in her stomach

In what it can be called as medical negligence, doctors conducted a Caesarean section surgery after which left a surgical mop inside female’s stomach. According to Mid-Day, the doctors from Vasai Virar City Municipal Corporation hospital who conducted a Caesarean section surgery on Renu Vishwakarma left a surgical mop inside her stomach. This caused her a severe stomach infection and she was immediately admitted into Nair hospital’s ICU where she is still undergoing treatment. Due to which she hadn’t yet held her baby even once since last month.
Renu’s husband Ramanujan Vishwakarma told the leading daily, “Her condition was extremely serious and she had developed such infection in her stomach that it had swollen completely. Doctors conducted several tests but couldn’t find the reason for her deteriorating health condition. A CT scan later showed a mop in her stomach which was immediately removed through a surgery.”
The incident took place on October 28, after Renu developed labour pain, she was rushed to a Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation hospital in Vijay Nagar, Nalasopara. Due to some complications, the doctors performed a C-Section on her, but later accidentally left a surgical mop in her stomach. The surgical mop was big as a normal handkerchief. After the operation within hours, she turned blue owing to infections and was referred to a tertiary-level hospital. She was shifted to Nair hospital where she was admitted into the ICU on October 30.
