Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday paid tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and said people like him do not divide people on the basis of “caste and creed”. Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled Patel’s ‘Statue of Unity’ in Gujarat the same day.


“Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel never wanted to divide people. He always pursued a politics of unity. Today, on his birth anniversary, the country must stay united. I feel those who are great leaders of the country treat all the people with equal respect. They do not divide people on the basis of caste and creed,” Mamata said at a public meeting in Jalpaiguri.


The 182-metre-high Statue of Unity, planned as a tribute to Patel and his contributions, was built at a cost of Rs 2,989 crore. “This world is one big country. There are people speaking various languages and practicing various rituals. But at the end of the day, we are one and that is our our biggest identity,” she added.


Meanwhile, the chief minister also hit out at the Centre for bringing “black days” to the country in the name of “acche din”.


“What is acche din? Can we describe dark days as acche din? Those who drive out people can never bring acche din in the country no matter how much they try… However, there is peace on in Bengal and they are trying to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere here. But we will maintain peace here and we want the country to remain united. That will be the acce din for the country,” she said.


Mamata also slammed the erstwhile Left Front and Congress governments in the state for not undertaking any development work in north Bengal districts.


“In the last 70 years, no development was carried out in north Bengal….We are building a new Asian Highway here covering Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar. Once completed, people will be able to travel to Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan with ease and trade and commerce will improve,” she said.
