It was an solemn occasion for the staff at the Kalantar office on Wednesday. The 52-year-old CPI mouthpiece had lost much funding in the last few years and decided to suspend operations starting November 1.


Maya Mukherjee had joined Kalantar in 1995 as a proof reader. “This paper and the people here have helped me sail through the toughest years of my life,” she said.


In its heydays, the paper sold more 50,000 copies. It was named by the renowned poet Bishnu De and the mast head of the paper had been designed by legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray.

According to senior party leaders, without advertisements from the central and state governments, the paper was finding it tough to find revenue to sustain itself.


Editor Kalyan Banerjee said that he is hopeful once the tough times are over, Kalantar would return to stands once again. There are attempts to start a weekly or a fortnightly in place of the daily.


After the final copy is edited and put on the pages, the editorial staff gathered around. Some CPI leaders arrived and asked the team not to lose strength or hope. “We shall overcome,” they sang.
