‘Activists being framed on false charges, humiliated’

“The biggest crime of the activists was to educate the poor and the marginalised about their constitutional rights,” said P. Sainath, senior journalist, while addressing people who had gathered at Valluvarkottam on Friday to protest the arrest of five prominent human rights activists by the Pune police. Several human rights activists, academicians and writers participated in the protest.

Mr. Sainath said that it was a deliberate attempt by the Maharashtra police to divert attention from major developments in the State.

“They have been criticised severely for failing to make progress in investigations into the deaths of Govind Pansare and Narendra Dabholkar. Many are not aware that less than two weeks ago there was a major raid and piling of arms by a Hindutva terror group in Nalasopara and that they have been getting bigger and bigger. Also the activists were arrested the same day the RBI report came out stating that demonetisation was a complete fraud. They have to divert from that,” he said.

Adding to this, N. Ram, Chairman, The Hindu Group Publishing Private Ltd, read out a news report — ‘In Tamil Nadu, too, arresting activists has become the norm’.

“Right to dissent is a fundamental right. All the High Courts and the Supreme Court have recognised that. But the reality is different. Activists are framed on false charges and humiliated,” said Mr. Ram.

He also spoke about the recently released book by filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri, Urban Naxals, which has drawn a lot of flak from people especially after its writer posted on social media asking people to send him a list of those they found to be best suited for the title.

“They’re using the term urban naxalism. It is, as another news report pointed out, derived from stupidity. This is nothing but an attack by communal authoritarianism and anti-people authoritarianism. All secular and democratic forces, including the Left, must join together and fight them,” said Mr. Ram.
