Spotify returns to the basics with ad-supported Stations app

READ MORE Stations’ structure isn’t difficult to understand. The fluff you normally see on a music streaming app isn’t here, and that’s because Spotify wants users to instantly have songs accessible considering there’s no on-demand aspect. Once you open the app, you’ll see a list of stations that get customized over time after you like specific songs. If there’s a station you’re not particularly fond of, you can quickly remove it from your dock. Stations will go back to work creating stations that interest you. Spotify admits that Stations is an experiment. Currently a very limited number of devices in select countries can access the app, and its maker hasn’t clarified who’s welcome to install it yet. There’s also no word on an iOS version coming. Anyone who can’t access Stations yet can give one of these free music streaming apps a try. Each includes a vast library of songs, and there are useful features you get d...

Earth Observing System: Monitoring the Planet's Climate

READ MORE NASA is well known for observating space, but the agency also has a strong hand in monitoring Earth. NASA’s Earth Observing System (EOS) is a collection of satellites designed to monitor and understand key components of the climate system and their interactions over an extended period. “NASA and other space agencies had launched satellites to study [Earth] before,” the agency said in a press release after EOS had operated for a decade and a half. “But the past 15 years have produced a more comprehensive look at Earth from space than any other period in history. At a time when our planet is undergoing critically important changes, this global view offers not only stunning imagery but also vitally important information about how Earth is changing.” History From its birth, NASA has focused not only on getting into space but on the Earth we launch from. In 1960, the agency launched its first weather satellite, TIROS 1. Although it operated for onl...

India's $250-Billion Military Upgrade Plan Is Sputtering: Foreign Media

READ MORE India celebrated its Republic Day by parading troops and locally made weapons in front of New Delhi’s colonial-era sandstone buildings and past 10 Southeast Asian heads of state — all potential buyers. Delhi hopes to export made-in-India military technology, including its BrahMos missiles, to smaller countries in Asia that fear China’s rise. India will have another chance to show off at the Singapore air show starting February 6, where BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture between India and Russia, will exhibit for the first time. But away from the pageantry of parades and sales pitches, experts suggest India’s $250-billion military modernization program is sputtering. That’s becoming more important as the U.S. pressures Delhi to tackle a larger role policing the Indo-Pacific, from the Indian Ocean to the waters off Southeast and East Asia. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi has held steady against geopolitical rivals, including with China in the fa...

Rajasthan Bypolls: Did Encounter of This Rajput 'Robin Hood' Gangster Turn the Community Against BJP?

READ MORE New Delhi: On the campaign trail in Ajmer, ahead of the Lok Sabha bypolls in Rajasthan, Congress candidate Raghu Sharma approached the dais and greeted a middle-aged woman called Nirmal Kunwar with respect. Kunwar is the mother of deceased gangster Anandpal Singh Didwana, a dreaded gangster who gave sleepless nights to Rajasthan police and evaded cops for over a year. For those outside of Rajasthan, a major party candidate paying obeisance to the mother of an alleged gangster may come as a bit of a shock but for the Rajputs of Ajmer, this was a sign of changing caste equations in politics. For them, Anandpal was less of a gangster and more of a ‘Robin Hood’ figure. Rajputs have traditionally been seen as supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), but in the 2018 bypolls, the Congress tested a social engineering experiment it can employ in the upcoming assembly polls in the state. While the BJP got closer to Jats this time, by fielding deceased MP Sanwarlal...

Cow smuggling charge against Pehlu Khan's aides, 2 others

READ MORE Police in Rajasthan’s Alwar have charged two men travelling with Pehlu Khan, who was lynched by a mob last year, with cow smuggling, saying they didn’t have the permit to take the cattle out of Rajasthan. Azmat and Rafeeq could not produce a ravanna (receipt obtained from cattle market) or the transport permit for the four cows, including two calves, they were transporting, says the charge sheet submitted in a local court on January 24. Similar charges have been brought against the pick-up owner and his driver son. ( TImeline ) “The JMC (Jaipur municipal corporation) must be issuing the permits. I have never issued any,” Amer sub-divisional officer Baldev Ram Bhojak said. Bhojak was the issuing authority for the permits at the Jaipur cattle market from where the animals were bought. Khan was taking the animals to his home in Nuh in neighbouring Haryana when he was attacked by alleged cow vigilantes in Alwar’s Behror area on April 1. He died in a h...

READ MORE MSP of crops to be up 1.5 times, projects worth Rs 12,000 cr on cards, announces FM Jaitley Photo:INDIA TV In an expected move to reconcile the persistent rural distress, the government today said that it will increase the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of all crops to at least 1.5 times of the production cost.  Presenting the Union Budget 2018-19, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that the government’s focus is to improve agricultural and rural economy, adding that it will ensure that farmers get the MSP for their farm produce.  He said that 470 APMCs have been connected to eNAM network, while assuring that the rest will be connected by March 2018. The finance minister also said that the government is aiming at doubling the farmers’ income by 2022 — a poll promise by the BJP in 2014 general elections and 2017 UP elections.  Also Read: Union Budget 2018 LIVE: FM Jaitley says every poor will have their own house under PM Awaas Yojana by 2022 ...

From a daily wage of Rs 60 to Rs 20 Lakh IPL contract, JK's Manzoor Dar eyes better life

Image
READ MORE Manzoor Dar is the only player from Jammu and Kashmir to be picked in the IPL. Photo:TWITTER: @PANDAV_MANZOOR From working as a labourer on a daily wage of Rs 60 to fetching an IPL contract worth Rs 20 lakh. Jammu and Kashmir batsman Manzoor Dar has covered a distance more awe-inspiring than the 100-metre sixes he is known for. Considering the hardships he has faced, the IPL contract with Kings XI Punjab is a life-changing moment for the big- hitting Dar, who finally foresees better times for him and his large family living in a nondescript village in Bandipora district. Many were made overnight millionaires but if there was one happy story emerging for the IPL auction last weekend, it was Dar. The burly batsman, who earned a name for hitting 100 metre sixes, was the last player to be bought by Kings XI Punjab. “I am really thankful to god for this opportunity, also KXIP and Preity (Zinta) mam. My life has been full of struggle and when I finally found a team (at auction...

Remarkable That India Have Changed Their Team Every Single Time, Says Faf Du Plessis

Image
READ MORE “I don’t see how we will ever be able to do that. We try to have a bit of consistency and string together a team. It’s obviously worked for India in India. In terms of the opposition, it doesn’t make a difference. You plan for everyone, prepare for everyone and whoever plays, it’s not like it surprises us,” he added. Du Plessis said his team has managed to outperform the famed Indian batting line-up in the ongoing Test series, which has proved to be the difference between the two sides in the opening two matches. While two of the three highest individual scores in the series have been scored by Indian batsmen, the Proteas have nevertheless still outbatted the tourists. Virat Kohli’s 153 in Centurion and Hardik Pandya’s 93 at Cape Town both have come in virtual isolation as they got very little support from other batsmen. In contrast, South Africa have managed to build important partnerships — Faf du Plessis and AB de Vil...

India vs South Africa: Wanderers Has Been A Special Venue For Us, Says Virat Kohli Ahead Of Final Test

Image
READ MORE Kohli added that performance of the pacers have been a big boost for the team and hinted at employing an all-seam attack against South Africa on a typical green Wanderers track in the third cricket Test. “Chances of anything happening are very bright. As I said, there is a lot of grass on the pitch. We would definitely look at that option. I am sure both the teams would be thinking about those options,” Kohli said when asked if India might go with an all-pace attack. “Not many times on overseas tours we have picked 40 wickets in two Test matches. So, I think that’s a big boost for us if the bowlers can continue doing their job. As I said, we have taken 40 wickets so far and we need to figure out what’s the best way to pick up 20 wickets again in this Test.” “We are going to have a discussion on that and the other combinations of the whole team. We will have a clear picture by the end of this afternoon,” he added. Indian batsme...

India vs South Africa: Virat Kohli Contradicts Coach Ravi Shastri On Preparation For SA Tour

Image
READ MORE “So we had that and we went ahead with that. As I said, we are not going to sit and think of outside factors that made us lose. It was our errors, our mistakes of not capitalising on situations that led us to the result being 2-0 so far,” Kohli said. “Responsibility isn’t just one-sided. I think it’s a collective responsibility of every one and those aspects (of preparing early) are and have been a point of consideration for a while,” said the skipper. Kohli said he is learning everyday as a captain and would like to handle the match situations better in future. “As a captain as well, you want to proudly do better in situations when the game has gone away from you at times. So, I have thought about those things as well – how you can still keep the pressure on and not let the game slip away in very quick time,” he said. “I always keep thinking about my game, how I can learn as a captain and get better in every aspec...

Michael Vaughan Pokes Fun At Manchester United's Marouane Fellaini, Gets Egg On The Face

Image
READ MORE Manchester United were completely outplayed and outclassed by Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night as they fell 15 points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City. Jose Mourinho’s men put in a tepid performance and lacked any kind of intent as they went 0-2 down to the Londoners. Christian Eriksen scored for the Spurs within 11 seconds to overshadow Alexis Sanchez’s Premier League debut for Manchester United. However, there was another incident during the match that got everyone talking — Marouane Fellaini’s substitution. With things looking dire for United after the hour-mark, Mourinho made two substitutions. The Portuguese manager threw on Juan Mata and Fellaini in the 63rd minute in a bid to salvage things. However, bizarrely Fellaini was taken off just seven minutes later, replaced by Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera. Despite getting a pat from Mourinho, the Belgium international didn’t look to impressed, and took off his shirt and ma...

Bengal Bypoll Results: Battle of Prestige for TMC, BJP Faces Litmus Test

READ MORE Kolkata: It would be clear in just a few hours from now whether the BJP has managed to dent the Trinamool Congress vote bank in some of the rural and semi-urban pockets of the state in the run-up to the crucial Panchayat polls in Bengal later this year. The by-election results of Uluberia Lok Sabha and Noapara Assembly seats, where counting starts at 7 am, will be a litmus test for the BJP, which is desperately eyeing fresh pastures in the state in the upcoming rural polls as much as they have been prestige fights for the ruling TMC. The death of two-time TMC MP Sultan Ahmed had left the Uluberia parliamentary seat in Howrah vacant, while the death of Congress MLA Madhusudan Ghose necessitated the Noapara Assembly by-poll in North 24 Parganas district. Ghose had won the Noapara seat with Left support in 2016. This time, however, the Congress is on its own due to the changed political position of the Left, one that gave fresh boost to TMC’s hopes of wresting the const...

READ MORE The submarine is designed to operate in all theatres, with means provided to ensure interoperability with other components of a Naval Task Force. The Indian Navy launched INS Karanj, the third Scorpene-class submarine, at Mumbai’s Mazagon docks in the presence of Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba on Wednesday. Speaking on the ocassion, Admiral Lanba said that the launch of INS Karanj marked a significant departure from the manning and training philosophy that was adopted for the first two submarines, adding that from the present vessel onwards, the Navy would be fully self-reliant in the training and certification processes.  The previous INS Karanj had served the nation for 34 years from 1969 to 2003 and had also participated in the 1971 war, he added. The submarine has an overall length of 67.5 metre and a height of about 12.3 metres. The hull form, fin and hydroplanes are specifically designed to produce minimum underwater resistance. The counting of votes for two Rajasthan Lok Sabha Constituencies Alwar and Ajmer and Mandalgarh Assembly seat is underway. Tri-Series: Shakib Al Hasan Inspires Bangladesh To Crushing Win Over Zimbabwe

Image
READ MORE Zimbabwe skipper Graeme Cremer claimed four wickets to restrict Bangladesh to a modest 216-9 despite a strong start provided by Tamim. The left-handed Tamim registered his third half-century in as many matches, becoming the first Bangladeshi to amass 6,000 ODI runs in the process. He was also named man of the match. Bangladesh collapsed from 147-2 to 170-8 with paceman Kyle Jarvis grabbing three wickets for 42 runs. “It was a difficult wicket to bat on. Seamers were also getting support from the wicket. We thought that scoring above 200 would give us chance to win the match,” said Tamim. “Today number 9, 10 and 11 batsmen provided nearly 50 runs for us and that made the difference,” he added. Number-10 batsman Mustafizur Rahman struck an unbeaten 18 to take Bangladesh past the 200-run mark and complete their full quota of 50 overs. Zimbabwe’s Jarvis credited the batting effort of Shakib and Tamim. “The way Tamim and Shakib batted, (by) hi...

Deepak Chahar's Five-For Stuns Karnataka; Yuvraj Singh Flops As Punjab Lose

Image
READ MORE Rajasthan medium pacer Deepak Chahar produced a career-best five-for in a stunning win over Karnataka on a day of upsets as Punjab, Delhi and Uttar Padesh succumbed to their first defeats in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Twenty20 Trophy on Tuesday. The biggest upset came under lights at Eden Gardens, when Jharkhand snapped Punjab’s two-match winning run with a dramatic four-wicket win with four balls to spare. Wicket-keeper batsman Ishan Kishan overcame cramps to set up Jharkhand’s chase with a quickfire 29-ball 54 (8x4s, 2x6s). It was a forgettable day for Yuvraj Singh, who played a miserable innings of 17 from 33 balls (1×4) and was slow on the field as Punjab were severely let down by the senior pro to post a mediocre 149 for seven. Jharkhand were off to a flier with Ishan’s superb knock before veteran Harbhajan Singh bowled him through the gate with a wrong one en route to a tidy 1/21 that included eight dot balls. Saurabh Tiwary (24 off 22 balls) and Ka...
