Name missing from Assam national citizens' register? Don't worry, say officials

Late last night, the Assam government came out with the first draft of its much-awaited National Register of Citizens (NRR). The draft includes names of 1.9 crore people out of a total 3.29 crore applicants in the state.
The draft recognises these 1.9 crore people as legal citizens of India.
However, those who find their names missing from the draft should not worry since it is just that – a draft.
“It [updating the NCR] is a tedious process to verify the names. So there is a possibility that some names within a single family may not be there in the first draft,” NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
“There is no need to panic as rest of the documents are under verification,” Hajela added as he promised that the entire process of preparing Assam’s National Register of Citizens, which is being carried out under the watch of the Supreme Court, will be completed by this year.
All the people who don’t find their names shouldn’t have any apprehensions. As soon as their verification is over, we will come up with another draft. The process of updating Assam’s NRC began three years ago with authorities inciting applications in May 2015. A total of 6.5 crore documents were received from 68.27 lakh families across Assam.
The NRC can be checked via websites – www.nrcassam.nic.in, www.assam.gov.in, www.assam.mygov.in or www.homeandpolitical.assam.gov.in – or by visiting help centre that have been set up across Assam.
Assam, which faced influx from Bangladesh since the early 20th century, is the only state having an NRC, first prepared in 1951.
The Supreme Court, which is monitoring the entire process, had ordered that the first draft of the NRC be published by December 31 after completing the scrutiny of over two crore claims along with that of around 38 lakh people whose documents were suspect.
