Name missing from Assam national citizens' register? Don't worry, say officials

READ MORE Late last night, the Assam government came out with the first draft of its much-awaited National Register of Citizens (NRR). The draft includes names of 1.9 crore people out of a total 3.29 crore applicants in the state. The draft recognises these 1.9 crore people as legal citizens of India. However, those who find their names missing from the draft should not worry since it is just that – a draft. “It [updating the NCR] is a tedious process to verify the names. So there is a possibility that some names within a single family may not be there in the first draft,” NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. “There is no need to panic as rest of the documents are under verification,” Hajela added as he promised that the entire process of preparing Assam’s National Register of Citizens, which is being carried out under the watch of the Supreme Court, will be completed by this year. All the people who don...

Despite Photographs, Authorities Deny Violation of Cattle Transport Rules

READ MORE New Delhi: As the country continues to witness incidents of increasing illegal cattle smuggling or transportation of animals in unhygienic conditions, a Delhi High Court bench has noted that no authority has submitted any data on prosecution and evidence shows “no compliance with Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.” Petitioner Saurabh Gupta had complained that a certificate from the veterinary expert was not being obtained prior to the animals being herded together in transport vehicles and being moved from one place to another. She also complained that such an act was in gross violation of the Rules 47 to 56 of the Transport of Animals Rules, 1978 which were exercised under Section 38 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. The bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar noted that no affidavit filed by the respondent revealed compliance with the law to prevent cruelty to animals. It also noted that authorities had n...

Image
READ MORE Kochi : Alleging “illegality” in provisions of the bill that criminalises instant triple talaq, an Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader on Sunday said Muslim bodies would challenge it in the Supreme Court if the Rajya Sabha also passes it. The Lok Sabha had last week passed the bill that makes triple talaq punishable by up to three years imprisonment for the husband. IUML leader in the Lok Sabha PK Kunhalikutty alleged there were many “lacunae” and “contradictions” in the bill passed by the Lower House last week. IUML national general secretary said various Muslim bodies in the country would move the Supreme Court if the bill was also passed by the Rajya Sabha. “We will challenge it in the Supreme Court. 2-Fold Plan Rahul Gandhi Must Use in 2018 to Avenge 2014 Humiliation

READ MORE Three questions need answers. Post the Gujarat elections, is the Congress’ existential crisis over? Is the Congress changing its ideological position to face the BJP’s merciless electoral machine? And finally what strategy will it acquire to deal with its potential non-BJP allies? A few might be disappointed that I did not ask the most expected question — is Rahul Gandhi ready to lead the Congress? With his spirited assault and witty attacks on (PM Narendra) Modi during the Gujarat elections, that debate should now end. Rahul is now officially the president of the party and Sonia has retired. The Rahul era has started for the Congress, but will he lead the country is the question. Since meeting the most humiliating defeat in its history, the Congress had gone into a shell. It had lost the will to fight. Rahul was seen as a reluctant warrior who had been thrust onto the battlefield against his own will. It was at a time when he was faced with the most battle-...

Rajini Does As Rajini Says – The Neta Inspired by The Actor

READ MORE Chennai: Naa eppo varuven epadi varuven nu yarukkum theriyadhu, aana varavendiya nerathula correct ah varuven (No one can say when or how I’ll come, but I will come at the right time) – one of superstar Rajinikanth’s legendary dialogues from the 1995 film Muthu came true on Sunday. Just like he prophesied, the actor, 22 years after Muthu was released, entered Tamil Nadu politics and promised to launch a party that will fight on all 234 assembly seats in the next state elections. With the demise of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa in December 2016 and DMK patriarch Karunanidhi’s fading presence in the political scenario, there currently exists a power vacuum in the state. Rajini, just like his colleague Kamal Haasan, has realised this and has thrown his hat into the ring . Looking back at his illustrious career, Rajini’s punch lines have been the highlights of his films. These cleverly crafted catchphrases have always contained a strong ...

Fox took a pass down the right wing in full flight and beat goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen with a shot through the pads to give the U.S. a win to close out the round robin for both teams. The U.S. finished with three wins (one in a shootout) and a loss while Finland had two wins and two losses. Captain Joey Anderson had two goals today; Fox and Casey Mittelstadt had a goal and two assists each; and, Brady Tkachuk had three assists. Mittelstadt now leads all scorers with nine points.  Both teams had already qualified for the quarter-finals, though their opponents won’t be known until later tonight once all round-robin games have been completed. “We’re finiding a way to win, and that’s the main thing right now,” said Anderson. “We didn’t play our best hockey at all times tonight. Sharp Rise in Patriotic Films Shown on Doordarshan This Year

READ MORE New Delhi: While debates on nationalism and patriotism continue to rage since the Narendra Modi government took office, the government is going full steam ahead by broadcasting ‘patriotic’ films on Doordarshan National. According to figures tabled in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, a total of 17 patriotic films were telecast on the national TV channel. This is a sharp rise from just one patriotic film telecast in 2014, when the Modi government first took office. Harish Dwivedi, BJP MP from Basti in Uttar Pradesh, asked the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in a written question, “Will the Minister of Information and Broadcasting be pleased to state the number of patriotism based films made and broadcast by Doordarshan during each of the last three years and the current year; whether a sharp decline in the making of patriotism based films have been observed during the past few years; if so, the details thereof, and the reasons therefor; whether the Govern...

The much-awaited first draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) was published on the last day of 2017. The rest of the names are under various stages of verification, Registrar General of India Sailesh said at a press conference held at midnight where he made the draft public. “This is a part draft. However, NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela assured that those whose names have been excluded in the first list need not worry as the body will come out with more names to add to the list. “It is a tedious process to verify the names. READ MORE Imphal:  Some tension prevailed along the India-Myanmar border in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district on Sunday, a day after Myanmar Army started levelling the no-man’s land, officials said. Ibomcha, said the official team inspected illegal constructions like pig pens of Indians at the no man’s land and told told the owners to dismantle these illegal constructions failing which the district administration shall move in.  On Saturday, the Myanmarese officials had started levelling the ground in the no man’s land.  Mr Ibomcha said that as both countries should not encroach upon the no man’s land, police stopped it. The other Tendulkar in Rajya Sabha: A low profile parliamentarian from Goa

READ MORE New Delhi: One a sporting icon with demi-god status who is rarely away from the headlines and the other a relatively low profile parliamentarian, the two Tendulkars in the Upper House of Parliament are a study in contrasts. Both Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar, 44, and Vinay Dinu Tendulkar, 56, are debutants in the Rajya Sabha. But that’s where their similarity perhaps ends. While the cricket ace, a nominated member of the House, makes news just by attending the Rajya Sabha, Vinay Tendulkar is the BJP’s man from Goa who stays behind the headlines, a quiet organisational worker who is chief of the party’s unit in the coastal state. Sachin Tendulkar’s first term began in 2012, and will end in April 2018, but Vinay Tendulkar’s run in the Rajya Sabha has just begun. He was elected to the House from the lone seat of Goa in July 2017. The Bharat Ratna awardee hit the headlines last week after he rose to speak on ‘the right to play and future of sports in ...

Delhi Has 3 Pollution Plans But No Consensus On Which To Follow

Image
READ MORE New Delhi:  If you have tears, prepare to shed them now – these words Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar could be relevant for citizens of Delhi. Only, you may not have to prepare to shed your tears, they may force themselves out owing to the pollution. There are currently three pollution plans for Delhi and while one of them is officially in play, there is little or no understanding of what is to be done with the other pollution plans. Also, few seem to have an answer for why there is no plan for the rest of India which has many cities that are often more polluted than the national capital. The plan currently in action is the GRAP or Graded Response Action Plan laid out by a Supreme Court-mandated panel called EPCA about a year ago. Since then, the National Green Tribunal has come up with one as well as the Prime Minister’s office. The PMO’s pollution task force came up with a 12-point action plan with the Central Pollution Control Board. But as sources...
