Truxima Approved as First Biosimilar to Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma Drug

READ MORE WEDNESDAY, Nov. 28, 2018 (HealthDay News) — Truxima ( rituximab -abbs) has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as the first biosimilar to the non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma drug Rituxan , the agency said Wednesday. A biosimilar is a biological product that is approved based on data showing it is “highly similar” to a drug already approved by the FDA, with no “clinically meaningful differences in terms of safety, purity and potency,” the agency said in a news release. Truxima, as with Rituxan, is approved to treat adults with CD20-positive, B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma . The most common side effects of Truxima are infusion reactions, fever , low blood lymphocytes, chills , infection and weakness . The drug’s label includes a boxed warning that users also may be at increased risk of fatal infusion reactions, severe skin and mouth reactions, reactivation of hepatitis B , and a rare deadly brain infection known as PML. States Struggle With Onslaught of Opioid OD Deaths

Mundell HealthDay Reporter THURSDAY, Aug. 30, 2018 (HealthDay News) — A new report on thousands of opioid overdose deaths across 11 states finds the problem is increasingly complex, but more can be done to stop it. The report, from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, looked at nearly 12,000 fatal opioid overdoses occurring between July 2016 and June 2017 in states across the Northeast, the Midwest and the West. “Most states were simultaneously struggling with a complex mix of prescription and illicit opioid deaths,” reported the team led by Christine Mattson, of the CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. Her team found that, of the total fatal ODs, nearly six out of 10 (58.7 percent) involved illicit “street” drugs such as heroin or fentanyl .
