Farmers end pit protest after JDA agrees on fresh land survey

Farmers called off on Tuesday their month-long agitation at Ninder village on the outskirts of Jaipur after receiving a written assurance from the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) on conducting a fresh survey of the land earmarked for acquisition.


The farmers had been agitating against land acquisition for a housing project proposed on nearly 1,350 bighas at Ninder. Under the banner of Zameen Samadhi Satyagrah, they had intensified the agitation from October 2, Gandhi Jayanti; 21 of them had buried themselves neck deep in pits.


A three-member committee will be formed for the fresh survey.


“We have reached an agreement with the JDA on the modalities of conducting a fresh survey, and called off the agitation after receiving a written assurance in this regard,” farmers’ leader Nagendra Singh Shekhawat told HT.


The agreement was reached after talks between representatives of the farmers and the urban development minister.


Singh said the government has agreed to their five-point demand, including a resurvey of the area. The farmers are hopeful that the new survey will reflect the ground situation and ensure a better compensation.


“The earlier survey conducted by the JDA before acquiring the land had many faults as many farms were marked as barren land and hamlets were shown as vacant land. A fresh survey will take care of the anomalies,” Shekhawat said.


In 2011, the JDA had issued a notification for acquisition of the land and the process was completed on paper by the middle of 2013. A farmers’ stir at that time had fizzled out; the agitation launched since September forced the government to talk to the protesters.


An earlier attempt to break the deadlock had failed as the JDA and the farmers had not agreed on the modalities of conducting a fresh survey.
