Study Finds Abortion Doesn't Lead to Depression

Image
READ MORE WEDNESDAY, May 30, 2018 (HealthDay News) — Abortion does not increase a woman’s risk for depression , according to new research. The study, of nearly 400,000 women in Denmark, challenges arguments that terminating a pregnancy takes a toll on a woman’s emotional well-being. “Policies based on the notion that abortion harms women’s mental health are misinformed,” said study leader Dr. Julia Steinberg. She’s an assistant professor of family science at the University of Maryland School of Public Health. “Abortion is not causing depression . Our findings show that women were not more likely to suffer from depression after an abortion compared to beforehand,” Steinberg said in a university news release. Claims that the procedure harms women’s psychological well-being have been used to justify policies that restrict access to abortion in the United States, she and her colleagues said. For example, at least eight states r...

Image
READ MORE BEIJING (Reuters) – China will cut import tariffs on nearly 1,500 consumer products ranging from cosmetics to home appliances from July 1, in a bid to boost imports as part of efforts to open up the economy. Workers load imported goods at a port in Nantong, Jiangsu province, February 24, 2016. REUTERS/China Daily/Files The move would be in step with Beijing’s pledge to its trade partners – including the United States – that China will take steps to increase imports, and offers a boon to global brands looking to deepen their presence in China. The finance ministry published a detailed list of products affected and their new reduced tax rates on Thursday, following early announcements of the broader plan. Starting next month, the average tariff rate on 1,449 products imported from most favoured nations will be reduced to 6.9 percent from 15.7 percent, which is equivalent to a cut of about 60 percent, the finance ministry said in a statement on its website...

U.S. allies hit back at Washington's steel, aluminum tariffs

Image
READ MORE WASHINGTON/PARIS (Reuters) – Canada and Mexico retaliated against the U.S. decision on Thursday to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports and the European Union had its own reprisals ready to go, reigniting investor fears of a global trade war. The tariffs, announced by U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross in a telephone briefing on Thursday, ended months of uncertainty about potential exemptions and suggested a hardening of the Trump administration’s approach to trade negotiations. The measures, touted by President Donald Trump in March, drew condemnation from Republican lawmakers and the country’s main business lobbying group and sent a chill through financial markets. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1 percent and the SP 500 shed 0.69 percent. Shares of industrial heavyweights Boeing and Caterpillar both fell, with Boeing down 1.7 percent and Caterpillar down 2.3 percent. Tariffs of 25 percent on steel imports and 10 percent on aluminum will be i...

Hales to replace Warner for Sunrisers

Image
READ MORE Alex Hales has picked up an IPL deal © AFP Notts Outlaws batsman Alex Hales has been signed by Sunrisers Hyderabad as a replacement for David Warner. The former Australian vice-captain was set to captain the franchise, but resigned and was then banned by the BCCI from playing in the tournament for his part in the ball-tampering scandal that emerged in South Africa this week. Sunrisers’ move for Hales means that his gamble to become a white-ball specialist despite missing out in the IPL auction has paid off – stressing his availability in the event of any replacements being needed. He was bought for his base price of INR 1 crore (USD 154,000) from the available player pool list. Hales’ failure to win a spot in the initial auction caused some surprise in England. He remains the only England player till date to score a T20I century and is also the only England batsman to feature in the top-10 list of the ICC T20I rankings. Hales, 28, had recently s...

Mature Mohammad Amir finds his comfort zone after Lord's performance

READ MORE Facebook Twitter Facebook Messenger Pinterest Email print comment A big thing happened in the life of Mohammad Amir today. For nearly every other elite athlete it isn’t a big deal at all. It is a duty they must fulfill but one they approach with various degrees of interest or disdain. Two days away from the second Test at Headingley, and 62 international matches into his second career, this was the first time Amir came out to face the media en masse. He’s given a few – very few – one-on-one interviews since he’s been back but generally within the team and management, it’s been known that Amir was the one guy they don’t put up to face the press. For obvious reasons – too many journalists means too many questions and too many questions means somebody is bound to ask about you-know-what, which is something Amir and Pakistan are trying to move on from. But today they brought him out and the rationale was as simple as it was logical...

The World Cup, the last audition to be The Best

READ MORE The world’s best players between the sticks will also be out to make their mark – Manuel Neuer was memorably voted one of the top three players in the world in 2014, partly on the back of his impressive performances at that year’s World Cup. Guardians of the net now have their own award, with the race well and truly on to succeed inaugural victor Gianluigi Buffon as the Best FIFA Goalkeeper 2018. The 2014 FIFA/FIFPro World11 was overwhelmingly made up of players who reached the semi-finals of Brazil 2014, with nine of the 11 reaching the final four with their respective nations – and we could see the World Cup have a similar influence for the 2018 edition. With fans from across the globe flocking to Russia 2018, supporters could make their mark at the global finals too – with the potential for an outstanding fan moment or gesture demonstrated at the global finals to be nominated for the 2018 FIFA Fan Award. Harendra Singh, who took over as coach from Sjoerd Marijne earlier this month, said it was important to select players on the basis of form and fitness, instead of simply looking at the age. Harendra has made five changes to the squad that travelled to Gold Coast for the Commonwealth Games, where the performance of a young side was criticised so severely that Marijne ended up losing his job.
