Letters to My Ex by Nikita Singh: Review

READ MORE Title: Letters To My Ex Author: Nikita Singh Publisher: Harper Collins Pages: 134; Price: Rs 199 Something about the title of Nikita Singh’s book will either make you smile or make you cringe. It will bring back memories about one or several ex’s and the things you want to say to them, and if you are anything like me, possibly have, often in the form of letters. But the reason I chose to read this book is nostalgia – the sense of nostalgia this very picturesque cover enticed me. The bundle of letters tied together with a piece of string with withered stamps and postage marks; the promise of connecting you to a loved one. Yes, I’m a sucker for charming covers, though I try not to judge books by them. Letters To My Ex-takes you through a year in the lives of Nidhi and Abhay – one that was meant to be a happy one, but turns out rather differently. During their engagement ceremony, Nidhi cops to her gut feeling and decide she can’t do this...

Duo's Life Term Reduced to 7-Year Jail for Killing Street Vendor Over Plate of Momos

Image
READ MORE New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has sentenced two persons to seven years in jail for killing a street vendor by hitting him with a gas cylinder after he asked them to pay for a plate of momos. The high court, while deciding the appeals of the two men, reduced their sentence from life imprisonment awarded to them by a trial court which had convicted them for the offence of murder. It reduced the jail term after modifying their conviction for offence of murder to causing death of a person without any intention. A bench of Justices S Muralidhar and IS Mehta considered that both men were of young age at the time of the incident in 2012 and had no history of any criminal activity. Their conduct in the jail was also found to be satisfactory. The court, however, maintained the conviction of Najafgarh residents Dharmendra and Jitender for the offence of attempt to murder. It also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 each on both convicts. The two men were held guilty by a trial court for ...

In Midnight Drama, Union Minister's Son Arrested For Bihar Violence

READ MORE Patna:  Surrounded by hordes of media personnel, Arijit Shashwat, the son of union minister Ashwini Choubey, was arrested late on Saturday night in Bihar’s capital Patna, in connection with the communal clashes in Bhagalpur town in the state two weeks ago. The 36-year-old BJP leader is accused of leading a Ram Navami procession without permission in Bhagalpur on March 17; provocative slogans were allegedly raised during the procession leading to communal clashes. The violence there is widely seen as the trigger for similar clashes in several parts of the state, and has exposed the Nitish Kumar government to fierce attacks from the Opposition. Arijit Shashwat, whose petition seeking to shield him from arrest was rejected by a court in Bhagalpur on Saturday, was taken into custody by the police shortly after midnight, barely 300 metres from the Chief Minister’s residence. But not before the young BJP leader – who cops curiously said had been missing despi...

Yogi Adityanath Calls SP-BSP Alliance A "Compromise For Power"

READ MORE New Delhi:  Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Saturday that any tie-up between the SP and the BSP to counter the BJP in 2019 Lok Sabha polls cannot be dubbed as an alliance, as it would be jut a “compromise for power”. “Is it a coalition or a compromise for power,” Mr Adityanath asked during an interview with Hindi news channel Aaj Tak when asked whether a coalition between the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) could damage the prospects of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2019. Taking a swipe at the opposition leaders, Mr Adityanath sought to know from them that even if they join hands, who would be their leader. “First let them decide who will lead them. They must decide, will it be Akhilesh Yadav or Mulayam Singh Yadav or Mayawati or maybe Rahul Gandhi if the Congress joins them. Rahul Gandhi must find his space. There are only two seats in a Cycle (SP’s poll symbol), you can’t add a thir...

In "Powerless" Chhattisgarh Village, Students Read To Get Out Of The Dark

Image
READ MORE Balrampur, Chhattisgarh:  For students making strenuous efforts to give the Class 10 exam, burning the midnight oil is not a cliche at their village where the brightest night light is the silver glow of the Moon if the candle has burned out. Electricity is yet to reach Trishuli village in Chhattisgarh’s Balrampur district, 415 kilometres from state capital Raipur. Trishuli village is only 15 km from Bharatiya Janata Party parliamentarian Ramvichar Netam’s house. The villagers say they chip in with firewood and small oil lamps so that students can go through their textbooks by the dim light of the bonfire or the lamps. “Government has started primary education for middle schools, but there are no proper roads to reach the schools. Due to unavailability of electricity, students have to study near a fireplace with some help from the villagers,” one of the students told news agency ANI. The villagers say they have asked the district authorities severa...

Why SM Krishna is a Lonely Man in Karnataka Politics Today

Image
READ MORE Bengaluru: More than six months ago, media houses in Bengaluru received a press release from the state BJP office. It was about the appointment of members to Karnataka state BJP social media cell. One name caught the eyes of everyone — SM Krishna. The former Karnataka chief minister and a Congress stalwart who switched sides a few months ago was nominated to the social media cell as one of the members. The moment local TV channels started flashing that news, his former colleagues in the Congress wasted no time and started ridiculing him, calling the BJP a “use and throw” party. They accused the BJP of insulting a “tall leader” like Krishna by nominating him to an “insignificant” social media cell. Some even openly said that Krishna had “deserved” that kind of treatment by the BJP. A red-faced BJP issued a clarification, claiming that it was not an official release and someone had “inadvertently” leaked it to ...
